How To Draw Ugandan Cartoons (by Aiko)

Jean (Farmer from Buganda)
Art [including Cartooning] is for everybody who is interested just like Agriculture or Architecture (The Triple As) if you put your energy into them; anyone who wants to draw can draw: Draw It Yourself (DIY)! Some people have asked me to teach them how to letter and draw like a Cartoonstitute or Faculty of Graphicsology offering Cartoongineering Lessons; so I took some time out to tell (even to any Philistines) how I know what I know: Lines and Colours.

AikoGraphics Logo Gallery (Bittersweet Symphony)
This is not projected like a TEDxArt Talk, Arua Mobile Monday nor Talks at Google (maybe just ArtTalk), but definitely my Worldview concerning The Design Process! The whole Earth is an Artroom! Alternative titles for this article can be: How To Remain An Artist Once You Grow Up!; Strip The Aesthetics; Artbook Zero; Who Wants To Be A Cartoonist?; Art & Technology; My Big 5 Steps To Drawing Ugatoons (Plus A Bonus 2); Why Aren't You Sketching?; A Freemium Sketch and Draw Artpreneurship Tutorial from Aiko (Cartoonist) or Lessons from The 55 Foundation (Use your Fingers!). Of course Talent helps immensely: maybe am addicted to Logotherapy like a drug or perhaps I was born with Obsessive Branding Disorder (OBD), Art-ism, Design-iosis, Art-iligo, High Art Pressure, Schizophreni-Art or Post Traumatic Sketching Disorder (PTSD) but unflinching REFINEMENT is the secret to drawing cartoons. Like Footballer Lionel Messi (Greatest Of All Time) once said, "Get better and better!" Everyone has many bad cartoons in them; the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out! You start with a sketch of the concept you want to express and then go on freely improving it. Just draw it! "Art is never finished, only abandoned," Italian Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci said that and it is 100 percent true. One recommended basic start method for drawing humans (though you can use any other) is to freely sketch two downward pointing triangles for males and two upward pointing triangles for females, smaller one representing the head on top of bigger one for abdomen. The space between the hairline, eyelashes, nostrils and chin is virtually equal. Legs are just two lines like Mrs. Achere taught us in P1. Then you can start adding the flesh from there. Personally, I prefer Circles for the head of both Genders because Females have sharper Chins which might require their Top Triangle to be pointed downwards too. For their Lower Triangle, the Dress fits perfectly. It's just that Men have broader Shoulders and flatter or narrower Hips. The Heads can be the same, but Hips make a Distinction. A good Illustration Style to copy is used in the Good News Bible, concepts are presented in a very simple way as incomplete lines forming shapes yet communicate perfectly. Blaze your own trail using portrait [longer vertical space] or landscape [longer horizontal space] drawing formats! Don't think you cannot; you can overcome your psychological barriers! I had a hard Time transitioning from drawing 2D Images to 3D in the early 90s like when I tried to draw a Neighbour's Car parked outside the Apartment opposite the one my Dad stayed in at the Nile Bank Condominium (Bukoto). It starts with triangles, circles or squares; geometry is very sacred. A ruler or tape measure can come in handy during very technical drawing but a whole mathematical set is a standby bonus especially when perspective drawing is involved. You can as well listen to your Favourite Music while you work. When we write words or ink cartoons, our fingers are usually near the tip, nip or ball point of a pen. However, when you start a drawing, you can hold the pencil further back and sketch freely with your body. Draw as fast as you think; keep the pencil moving, take action on the paper instead of holding back and getting lost in thoughts. When copying the faces in photos for portraits and caricatures or cartoons, I normally start by penciling the eyes, then draw downwards to the mouth before enclosing everything in the face. When you fail to reproduce the likeness the first time, there is a possibility that you will eventually get the face right if you keep trying again and again. Place a paper on top of what you have already inked or shaded so that it does not stick to your fingers and transfer marks on other parts of your drawing! After inking, I step away for some time before returning with a fresh mind to relook at the resemblance. Sometimes, the drawing feels alive with a soul especially when it looks very alike. If changes are needed, then I continue refining.

Loice Epetiru (Arua)
By age 4 while attending Daycare in someone's garage, we used to only play with wooden polygonal shapes; I do not remember drawing anything. The first time I realised that I might possess some Art Talent was during a Drawing Assignment at Modern Nursery (Bell Avenue, Jinja Town): At 5 years of age, I drew a saloon car from memory and added an antenna, something like the left sideview of a certain Jinja Doctor's blue and white ride famous in the 1980s and 90s; it was probably Dr. Walakira. I wanted to keep that drawing forever but failed [The automobile in the Music Video "Love You Everyday" by BEBE COOL, "The Way" by SHEEBAH KARUNGI, "Hustling" by RICK ROSS (Intro) plus Universal Soldier (1992 film), The Founder (2016 film) and Green Book (2018 film) reminds me of that artwork]. Artistic Primary School Classmates like Ivan Nsoita were motivating. Odota, the backward-walking vagabond was also an inspiration, he could draw at first glance though homeless. My big brother Victor Draman(i) Afayo aka Vyo inspired me with his cartoon drawings in the 90s too; they were quite fine lines though he did not pursue the genre and drifted more towards Information Technology. You must have the interest or passion for drawing.

I was baptised "Edward Ayikobua" (No. 549) at Bugaddu Church of Uganda in Bugerere (Kayunga) on 22nd April 1984, but dropped the Letter Y in my Surname (given by my Mother) following Advice from my Father when joining Primary 1 at Victoria Nile School in Jinja (The Pursuit of Happy-iness); made it shorter and more modern. At School, my Name was sometimes misprinted as Ikobua, Ikobwa or Aikobwa; I also wrote it as Aiko Bua, Aiko-Bua (paying Tribute to John Akii-Bua), Aiko'bua and Aiko'bu-a but Official Academic Certificates since PLE (1996) all have AIKOBUA where I derived my Penname. In my Primary 7, Art was not taught in order to focus on PLE. My S6 resembled my P7: it was my 2nd year in a new school where I spent five terms each overall; I only had one pair of casual shorts in some of the terms to change into because of the strict uniform rule [In P7 as Headboy, Kilama gave me a free pair whereas in S6, I bought one from Sendawula for 1,000 UgX] and I never studied Art as a class subject. Before University, there were only two classes in which I studied Art by my own initiative; S5 was the last time I handed in an Artwork for marking. Since the world wasn't coming to an end in Y2K, I experimented drawing with only ink (no pencil) after a request to draw Bob Marley by my Senior 4 deskmate Jean Rwamukaga (Kaahwa) nicknamed by SMACK classmates as Sato and Batusai like the Samurai X (Anime) Character. The assignment was like freedom from Mental Slavery! It required lock-in superfocus because ink-only mistakes are erased using a special blue rubber, razor blade or computer after digitising.
Thierry Henry (2000 Season), drawn on a ruled Exercise Book Page (blue Lines look faint here)
During one of our very first O-Level Art Lessons [in 1997], the Art Teacher taught us that a line is defined as a series of dots joined together (Roger that Yayoi Kusama!). That was the theory but it rhymed perfectly with my own personal convictions. In the early 1990s, I critically observed that newspaper photos were just a combination of dots [technically referred to as pixels] arranged diagonally; that inspired my forward-slanting ink textures. Sometimes, those dots in the original photos actually helped me reproduce exact likenesses. However, as technology advanced and it became easier to print megapixels in a small space, the visible dot format literally vanished. Despite some good pieces after 2000 especially Arsenal FC pictures plus other famous people, I still believe pre-sketching with a pencil while creating cartoons is paramount, because it's easier to make changes without damaging the paper. Inking should come last. Artists like Chinese maestro Kim Jung Gi can draw with only a brush pen and produce amazing imaginative artwork, no pencil nor rubber needed. Meanwhile, Englishman Stephen Wiltshire has an impeccably photographic Memory. Sometimes, I actually used tracing paper plus a spent Pen with no Ink inside instead to copy images. Othertimes, I used a seethrough door or window glass for tracing; you can use a free-held one too. I once marvelled at a German Pencil Art Book borrowed from Benjamin Ndagijimana - my half German, half Mufumbira Art and German Language Classmate though from a different stream. Benji was a massive Rugger too and his book really inspired me; it was amazing how photorealistically German artists could reproduce still life using only pencils. No wonder most if not all of the special 2B to 6B art pencils we used to see and use were manufactured from Germany for instance Staedtler pencils. Meanwhile the standard HB pencils came from all over including UG, Kenya and China. When referring to Artists to emulate, it is not very common that Females are mentioned but Laura C. Breezy from Spain has a Colour-shading Style I fancy. Interestingly, she only uses Pencils. There are many others though not listed here. Meanwhile, the Computer Graphics or Digital Colouration from 3D Illustrator Jomar Machado is breathtaking. I became born again at the end of 1997 because I wanted to avoid Pornography or nudity-induced lust; it was also my Puberty Time which floods your Body System with endless Libido; I even drew naked Women (Imaginary Compositions). Thank GOD I was never a Homo, but thought a lot about the desirable Girls from my Past. Consequently, I decided never to borrow the big book entitled "The History of Art" from the SMACK Library; it had so many sculptures and paintings of naked females. What I did not realise was that I would not avoid anatomy forever if I wanted to draw better human figures. Art becomes quite controversial when females ask you to draw them naked like Still Life! GOD really blessed females with beautiful, pleasant curves but they need to cover their beauty from lustful hearts and covetous eyes; it's a thin Line. Up to this day, am still satisfied that in Y2K during SMACK's Millenium Art Exhibition (I was in S4), three of my paintings were selected among very many others from OBs since 1906 when the school started. One vivid one I remember was painting a blue lamp green. Most oil lamps in Uganda were blue in real life. I took my dad who had visited me to see my Artworks in the SMACK Artroom surrounded by the Tennis Courts, Quadrangle and Geography Room; I felt proud about myself that day! If I were a Ninja Turtle during my teenage years, streammate Jude Karuhanga - a Master in Pencil Art plus pencil sharpening and one of my O' Level Art Class Heroes alongside Maurice Kawekwa [undisputed Master] plus Francis Otim [Oparaah, very good at sidestepping in Rugby], would definitely be among my three brothers. JK encouraged me to read Comics.
The Premiership's Invincible One (Talent, Intelligence, Motivation)
There is a shading technique that my Youngest Sister - Rachel Asizuru taught me; she said she learnt it from her Ordinary Level school Progressive Bweyogerere. It involves folding a small piece of paper and rubbing it against the (black or coloured) pencil shading to create a smooth colour texture in the drawing. Originally, I was using saliva on my finger to create the texture. In 2001 (Senior 5), I dropped out of the Fine Art Class because of constantly deteriorating grades (that fell by 7 marks every year since 1997 when I scored 83 percent on average in Art, then 76, 69 plus maybe 62 in the C4 registered during UCE; expected 55 in S5 because assignments were already getting me 5 out of 10) and my impatience to learn Sequential Art which was not being taught. With my Artbook in hand, I walked to the Technical Drawing Class to get a placement, but the teacher told me while other students stared, "You cannot start climbing a tree from the stem!" simply because I hadn't done TD in Ordinary Level. Feeling terribly crashed in my spirit, I humbly walked back to my Literature Classroom with TEARS in my eyes, sat down on my desk and decided to teach myself how to draw cartoons. I thought I was in school to learn what I didn't know, but the teacher couldn't let me sit. From that day forward, I stubbornly stopped writing the Name GOD with lowercase letters. I had to choose between flanking UACE Exams (I expected 48 percent basing on the Trends) or teaching myself an Art Technique that can earn me Financial Papers. So I committed myself to Cartooning. For three Weeks, I used to walk home [Kunstgarten - Art Garden] from Makerere to Kyebando Kisalosalo via a macadamized Kira Road and an untarmacked Kamwokya Slum-Pass with my A3 Artbook in hand. It was just too big to fit in my schoolbag; I couldn't even fold it flat nor round. In the Morning on rainy days, the Taxi from Kyebando would get stuck in Kamwokya mud so I would not pay the 200 Shillings required and spend it on whatever I wanted. Today the road is tarmacked and costs 500 UgX or over. After dropping Art, I was still invited by Chairman Kizza (a very talented artist and kebab cook studying Sciences) to be an honorary Member of the Art Club. The ambition was to promote Art in the school, I hope we tried though I was not too attached to the club, did my own Art things. Mad Magazine borrowed from Ivan Musoke (Soki) in the Geography Class who bought his issues from Kenya, inspired me a lot alongside a Wolverine Comic Magazine (I requested my 3rd but 2nd Living Sister - Doris Chandiru to get for me from the old Aristok Booklex on Kampala-Jinja Road), Reader’s Digest Magazines (bought for me by my Eldest Sister - Gladys Sakaru), a Bible that belonged to my grandfather (who departed in 1983) and illustrated by Horace Knowles, a Brochure from Joe Kubert School of Cartooning and Modesty Blaise cutouts from New Vision newspapers. Some Advanced Level hostelmates especially Garvey Smith encouraged me to pursue my dream. Even if the road to success gets rough, keep trying (including an alternative bypass)!
The Bholims (Arshad & Arrwa)
It was Gigs (or Commissions) from family, friends (like Arshad Ahmed Bholim, Paul Amoru, Edmund Asingwire, Walter Geria, etc) and strangers that kept me drawing from A-Level onwards and beyond Uganda Christian University. Practice makes better! My Favourite Comics (Cover) Artist [Marko Djurdjevic] once said that all things (including those that look linear) are crooked if you appreciate "the detail" in their edges, so no need to worry about your lines as long as you make sure the overall picture looks good in the end. While painting giant theatre murals for KADS (Thanks to Jennifer Hengstenberg [The Emperor's New Clothes, 2007], Jeffrey W. Harrison, his wife Katherine Liao plus Flora Aduk [Why The Birds Sing To Me, 2009] and Arfaan Ahmed Bholim plus Trudy McGilvray [Oliver! 2012]), I reconfirmed that cartooning is all about "lines and colours", that's the basic. West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECo) once had a wonderful cartoon art billboard in Sambya on the West Side of Nebbi Highway featuring a man whose hair was being shaven by a barber. Roadside artwork can be a gem for learning Art. Since the mid 1990s, I used to only play Soccer plus card games with my first best friends in Kyebando, but by the late 2000s, I had discovered that some of them were really good artists for example Herbert Tamale (Painter) and his brother Ssali (Graphics). Their elder Ssekitto is also gifted in Engineering. Having gotten inspired by the Jehovah's Witnesses booklets the Kafeero Family shared with mine, I bet the artistic photorealistically painted illustrations in the magazines inspired them too. Other Artists I can recommend for emulation include Mort Drucker (MAD Magazine), South African Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro), JR (Luni - Fun - Artics), James Gayo (Kingo), Art Ayris (Founder of Kingstone Studios and Executive Editor of the Kingstone Bible), John Tenniel, etc. Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Virtual Reality (VR) like in a game engine/ box that mixes Google Earth plus Gran Turismo type of graphics can also help shape someone's 3D perspective. But always try to learn more from the Best Artists!
The Standard (UCU Newspaper) 2008

Drafting never ends. Even the 2008 Maisha Film Lab inspired me to create Video Comics. Believe in your own ingenuity! As long as you can imagine it, then you can draw it. It's a matter of refining. I knew I would paint again on a large Scale in 2016 basing on the Pattern of my past dimensional paintings and it felt like deja vu when the Springs Arua owner invited me in December 2015 [third Term holidays] to his School. Emmyways wants children to be educated, that's why he builds schools. Then in 2017 between Thursday 19th January and the beginning of the new Academic Year [Monday 6th February - Tarehe Sita Day], I cartoongineered my Hugest Mural in Arua at his new Springs Kindergarten, about 100 metres west of the original block. Before I even knew who owned Springs Primary School, I wanted to paint a Mural for the School but told absolutely noone. Either a small Bird reported my Thoughts or GOD saw through my Heart and made it happen. While studying Art in the late 90s, there was a very strong belief that Art materials are too expensive and hinder people from venturing into the Business of Art; a paintbrush cost as high as 40,000 UgX and for paints like acrylics, you wouldn't even want to know. However, by 2017 you could purchase a pack containing 12 horsehair paintbrushes from stationery or bookshops at only 10,000 UgX [around 2 US Dollars]. Pray and be very patient...

In 1992 (Primary 3), the Religious Education teacher told us to write and draw in our exercise books what we wanted to become when we grew up. I was only eight years old and drew for her a Footballer, not a Musizi wa rangi [Painter]. Though I loved Art, soccer was my religion; I wanted to be like Romario, deceptively sluggish but very lethal in Zone 14. Sometimes I would play soccer until 8PM. A wound on my right hipside (caused by a broken metallic fence pole) that was almost stitched though the amazing Doctor Kalikwisha on Oboja Road excused me because I was still young could not stop me nor could another on my right sole from a broken Sprite bottle cut in Bukoto. My big right toe nail would sometimes bleed from collisions but I would still kick on. On Sunday mornings, I would wake up to play football in the small all-murram pitch next to a neighbouring block. As hood captain, I used to keep footballs and also knew how to make them using milk sackets [I would blow in air through ballpoint pen tubes tied to the cut end and cap them with the writing tips], polythene bags, papers, strips of cloth, rubber tapes [lukoba], soda straws or banana fibres. Occasionally, my father had to drag me on the ground away from the pitch to bathe and dress for prayers. At Church, as a kid I would be sent to Sunday School but I let the knowledgeable boys and girls answer questions as I quietly waited to play soccer afterwards. At school, I played more football than mini cricket, rugby or any other game; in P5, I was even part of my Stream Team (Love is tough) but my Football Dreams collapsed and died when I left Jinja the following year. My mother would beat me for "poor handwriting"; however instead of hating her, I taught myself the commonest fonts used in newspapers, novels and other books. I fought hard the desire to become a runaway streetkid. My handwriting became standard but much smaller and I made my First Scrapbook around 1994 containing some complex stuff I copied from newspaper sports articles and magazines; Arsenal's Ian Wright [in a JVC jersey] nudging a ball forward with his right boot towards your face was my front page drawing. At that time, I was not even a Gooner; I became a diehard Arsenal fan four years later and drew lots of Arsenal Pictures. I used to marvel at individuals mainly like John Barnes [Liverpool], David Ginola [Tottenham], Tony Yeboah [Eintracht Frankfurt], Rivaldo [Barcelona], Eric Cantona [Manchester United], Raul Gonzalez [Real Madrid], Luis Figo [Barcelona], etc and not teams except maybe die Mannschaft in 1990, Bayern Munich [enlightened by UTV's Football Made in Germany Program], Nigeria and Brazil in 1994. My passion for Arsenal helped me hone my face-copying skills. Above all else though in the 90s, NBA Legend Michael Jordan was my Number One Sportsman, Athlete, Olympian, Motivation, name it! At Kalinabiri Primary School, I turned down a Call-up to the School Soccer Team in 1996 by Players like Tom Lumu [a Streammate from whom I learnt the Zidane Spin] because I hated being caned for academics and needed to focus on books in order to jump the monthly Firing Squad which I successfully did. Besides I was already Headboy which was too much performance pressure for a kid. In 1997, I became a Calligrapher having mastered the cursive script style I taught myself in KLA from a Christmas Carols Book. I would do lettering on mail pads, autograph books, envelopes and greeting cards for anyone at no charge despite pressing healable dimples in my second finger. My Philosophy was Pay What You Want (PWYW - Piwiyiwi) though classmates recommended that I charge 100 UgX per envelope and were ready to collect it for me, but I was not into fixed Amounts; I asked for nothing expecting anything. There is a simple handwriting I taught myself by studying Multichoice’s TV and Dish Magazines since the 90s, something like Calibri but the lowercase A is altered from Typeface “a” to a circle-chord and an upright line on the right. Meanwhile, Capital I acquires two Bars (top and bottom) to avoid confusion with lowercase L; Capital J may get a roof or not. As for numbers, 1 may get a base line to avoid confusion with 7. This is the main Fontstyle I prefer when making Kindergarten classroom charts today. Classmates I sketched objects and humans for during Art Assignments in S1 and 2 got 10 out of 10 while I scored only 9 but I did not mind. The recognition of my ability by SMACK classmates led me to study more artstyles plus fonts and sometimes I would mix them up for aesthetic effect; am glad computers are built with many font styles.

Cynthia (Brown skin and green background plus amazing contrast added using Gimp 2.8 software which creates easier-to-edit Raster [Bitmap] Graphics described by Pixels or Dots like in Windows Paint and Photoshop that nonetheless can also convert PSD Files to Vector Formats. Software that make Vector Graphics include Inkscape, Corel Draw, Gravit Designer, Adobe Illustrator marked as Ai instead of AI, etc; Edges created by defining Points and Curves remain crisp when Vector Graphics are scaled or resized making them more suitable for Logos and Cartoons, though Raster Graphics Software feel better for me)
In 2001, I decided to start an Art label and called it "Atelier" which is French for studio. I would copy designs from nature especially designs and colours on birds, animals plus plants like sisal and so forth to create T-shirt designs and other patterns. However since I wanted to draw mainly faces, I changed it in 2002 to "Imitari" [Latin for "Portrait"]. Then during my Senior 6 vacation while returning to the compound of my parents on Mt. Wati Road, a new name "AikoGraphics" suddenly suggested itself to me as if it had descended from heaven into my head like a [shortwave] radio signal: West Nile/ GOD bless Arua 4 ever! My first Mission Statement was: "For creative world-class designs and portraits!" but later changed it to "Custom-tailored design!" because I hoped to do any kind of Art. My initial target was creating Advertisements; Logos like American Art Director/ Graphic Designer - Paul Rand or Briton Seb Lester (who does Letterforms, Patterns, Ornament and Heraldry plus has a Calligraphy Class); Portraits; Posters and Badges (Limited Passion unless required style is relaxed [by school demand most especially]). On Sunday 2nd February 2003 at 4:39PM, AikoGraphics was conceived in black and white (or blue and grey). I designed my Aiko inverted or flipped Nike swoosh logo from 2001 to 3 inspired by the old Xantrex logo I saw in The New Vision Classifieds. Bigups to Carolyn Davidson who designed the iconic 35 US Dollar (206 in 2015 at a Rate of 2 per Hour for over 17.5 Hours) Nike Swoosh adopted in 1971: Just draw it! Comic Book Fonts came in handy during my cartoon revisions around 2003 and I chose a full alphabet style I would use for all my future speech balloons. As for other sounds, I just use anything I feel like. Somewhere between September 2003-4 in the Old UCU Library's Computer Lab, I discovered that Nikki Aham in Japan uses an Aiko Graphics label. So, I contacted and told her I also use the same name but will not fight any legal battles over the name. I also found out that it's a company name in Oregon, USA. There was also a Cannabis-promoting Artmedia Website that uses it. In 2005 having failed to get internship at New Vision and Procurement News [though the nephew to Mr. Ben Bella (my UCU Lecturer and Department Dean who had addressed my Internship Letter to only New Vision) sent me to interview Capital FM's Juliana Kanyomozi for BusinessWeek Newspaper], I decided to create a portfolio of random campus cartoons that got me my First Cartoonist Job two years later at The Standard [Uganda Christian University Newspaper] till 2015 when I was let off mysteriously after a supervisor's missteps. The work was really fun though sometimes I felt quite drained spending sleepless nights drafting. The Drawing Style in the Longman Contemporary English Dictionary from my Cousin Micky Amati also inspired me to continue cartooning. The Game ain't always as sweet as Honey, but Money makes you forgive it when paid. Strict Deadlines keep you active. Photo Emulsion or Mod Podge on Silkscreens is another Escape Plan.

Aiko Toon - Venezuela Chaos (2019)
In 2019, my New Year's Resolution was: "To draw more". I asked GOD where HE wanted me to apply my Cartooning Skills and HE showed me a Dreamvision that I did not interprete well until a few Days later. At 35 (lower Presidential Age Limit of the 1995 Ugandan Constitution), I was unexpectedly called back to the UCU Standard after a four Year Hiatus by my very diligent Graduate Fellow and previous Comrade-at-Work John Semakula (also probably the Toughest Defender I have ever faced in Football) to draw Editorial Cartoons again; I accepted without even blinking as I connected the Dots in my Dreamvision. Maybe Cartooning is my Calling, sometimes I feel like a Comics Journalist or Sitdown Comedian (Fun Factory/ Barbed Wire/ Comedicine Type of Way) drawing Cartoon after Cartoon. The Wikipedia article entitled "Editorial Cartoon" states that: A political cartoon commonly draws on two unrelated events and brings them together incongruously for humorous effect. Cartooning involves: Labeling, Caricature, Exaggeration, Symbolism, Analogy, Metaphorism and Irony. A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or Graphics Card/ Video Card/ Video Board in a Computer takes data from the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and turns it into Pictures. The 9 Ps to the Editorial Cartooning Process I believe in include: Passion, Practice, Production, Promotion, Persistence, Publication, Patience, Peace and Prudence. From Mr. Bean Cartoon Series, I learnt that the neck needs to be small so that the lower body can be resized to create the Big Head Cartoon Effect without stress. Study your real Eyes plus Mouth in a Mirror and Fingers to draw better Facial Expressions and Hands! Believe, Begin and Become. At the Beginning of my Standard Newspaper Editorial Cartoonist Journey (2007), I used to draw a Panel on the Foolscaps where I inked my final Cartoons but later realised that it reduces your workspace tremendously plus using a Computer to create the Lines is more perfect and less Time-consuming (Semujju helped me with that). I also decided to draw editorial cartoons from head to toe only after waist upwards in a few panels. Cartoons are metaphoric Dream-like Images of our Opinions. One Saturday in December 2010 while preparing to visit an aunt in Arua the following Monday, I got a call to draw cartoons for Sunday Vision for only one month since Mr. Ras was going on leave briefly. On Sunday, I was in transit to KLA and could not believe I was seeing a five year old dream come true like a Y-Corner (Either you go left, or you go right!). It taught me that you have to "[b]e very careful what you wish for, you might receive it!" I used to put a Copyright symbol before my "Aiko" label on the editorial cartoons I drew at UCU but while at Vision, I dropped the habit because I was told they become file images that can be reused. Nevertheless, my logo never changed, still arial rounded with an inverted Nike swoosh though some prefer to call me "E". A ream of unruled foolscap paper comprising 500 sheets cost about 15,000 UgX in 2014 (over 20,000 in Twenty22). Exodus 20:4-6 made me wonder if sculpting aint right, but the only caveat emptor I put to this Artform is that the shapes must not be bowed down to as the law clearly states, especially the ones purportedly depicting holy things. When worshipped, sculptures graduate to idols with invisible demons attached. No matter how beautiful tattoos look, Leviticus 19:28 and 21:5 discouraged me from doing that kind of Art from wayback when I first read the Law of Holiness and its statutes though I've skinpainted before. Edwin Sande, my St. Michael Royale hostelmate from Bushenyi [2004 to 6] studying Business Administration at UCU Mukono who usually called me a "Comedian" told me to use grid boxes when drawing faces and even had a portrait of his political icon [Zimbabwean President] Robert Mugabe hanging on his room wall. He drew it using those guiding lines. The method seemed laughable to me because I had already switched to free-style eye measurement inspired by my ink-only experimentation in 2000 but it can still be useful like it is in Geography mapping: It helps with co-ordinating the facial proportions. Mathematics is very vital for any artist and I strongly recommend it because it comes in handy during technical design like measuring lengths, angles, circles and other shapes. My Favourite Math Book will always remain “Preparatory Mathematics (with Answers) - Revised Edition 1989, Reprinted 1990, 1991, 1993 (Thrice) and 1994” by B. J. Mehta and C. C. Desai, published by Evans Brothers (Kenya) Limited. I got it from my Sister Christine around P5 in 1994 but used it up to S4 (Y2K), it was that helpful and interesting. However when copying faces, I do not fancy drawing lines first because it eats away some time. I just try to pencil out a face that looks close, that is why I opted for caricature disguised as portraiture just in case I fail to reproduce the exact resemblances.

UCIFA Logo (Redrawn in 2007)
In 2005 during dinnertime at my (third though) second living sister's MUBS Nakawa Graduation Party at College Inn Makerere, my Favourite Uncle (coz I've spent a very long Time with him) Jad Johnsons Tabule told me they wanted to start a Magazine for their Clearing and Forwarding Industry. I was still at UCU Mukono Campus but told him I would be available after 2006. So when I finished my last Pre-Graduate Exam Paper on a Friday in April 2006, he told me to meet him at Daisy's Arcade on Buganda Road (KLA City) the following Tuesday, he had a Court Case in Masindi on Monday. Being the Secretary General at UCIFA (Uganda Clearing Industry and Forwarders Association), he introduced me to several industry players including UCIFA Chairman Omar Kassim (Died 2017), Kenya Ports Authority, URA Commissioner Generals, Customs Agent Herbert Dkoria (helped me make it to The Standard Newspaper in Time for my Interview as the Editorial Cartoonist on the Sunday he was travelling for his brother's funeral in Mbale around April 2007. He came to my Uncle's MTAC Nakawa Office to pick something and luckily found I had opened it, but instead of me giving him Mabugo [Condolence Money], he gave me Transport Money which I did not have after wasting it the preceding day and missing five Calls from Mukono because I had mysteriously forgotten my Phone at Home; my first Newspaper Cartoon was published a couple of Weeks later on my Big Brother's Birthday - Monday 7th May 2007), James, Mbumbu, Fred, Dorcus Kitonsa, Apolo Malisu, etc plus themes I had to write about. Being an Artist and having heard from clearing agents that some logos in the industry were actually designed in Kenya, an idea suggested itself that I should redesign the UCIFA logo for my uncle from a black and white logo to a coloured crest and it was accepted immediately. It set me up to design more logos in the industry, something I wanted to do instead of the newswriting. Nevertheless, I also collected and digitised some industry data when my uncle plus the UCIFA Secretariat moved to MTAC Nakawa in 2007. I even got a dream pass into URA (Uganda Revenue Authority)'s CBC (Customs Business Centre), constantly visible through my top floor office window, courtesy of Agent Francis Draga but even though the paper magazine was not printed, I created a Kargo (Magazine then Directory) Blog in 2008 and posted business info. Industry players liked it and gave feedback but I kind of later went off the boil; I'm more into Art than pure Journalism. As Foundations, I believe there are basically three Types of Logos: 1. Mark (Abstract Geometric Form, Brandmark, Caricature standing alone, Cartoon Character, Chinese Hanji Character, Colophon [a Publisher's Emblem or Imprint on a Book], Colour, Cuneiform, Decoration, Diagram, Emblem, Emoji, Emoticon, Flag on a Pole, Grapheme, Hieroglyphic, Icon, Ideogram, Illustration, Image, Japanese Kanji, Korean Kanja, Logogram, Logograph, Mascot, Morpheme, Petroglyph, Photograph, Pictogram[me], Pictorial, Picture, Polygon, Shape, Sign, Standard, Symbol, Totem, Trademark, Wingding) eg Apple Computers, Air Jordan, VLC Media Player, Olympics, Sony Ericsson, Batman, Messi, Israeli Star, Prince (singer), etc; 2. Font (Abbreviation, Acronym, Ambigram, Block Letter, Business Title, Company Name, Gramogram or Grammagram [Rebus made up of only Letters like UCU Smile = You See You Smile], Letter, Ligature [two or more Letters joined but not forming a Word], Logotype, Masthead, Moniker, Monogram or Initial[s] (like LV for Louis Vuitton), Name, Numberplate, Script, Street Name, Text, Typemark, Wordmark) eg the redesigned UBC TV DOG (2019), Lenovo Computers, Panasonic, Sunseed, eTV, Sunday Vision (though it keeps changing), JVC, Bata, TIME Magazine, Nokia, Yahoo!, CNN, Gillette, etc and 3. Combination (Badge, Banner, Billboard, Cartoon with Font, Coat of Arms, Coin, Crest, Emblem (with Text inside Symbol), Flag with Words, Public Identification, PR, Rebus [Puzzle Device which combines Letters with Pictures representing Words like Love TV can have a Rebus of a red Heart and the Letters TV on the right, bottom or inside], Seal, Tattoo) eg 88.2 Sanyu FM (Today's Best Music), 91.3 Capital FM, Gordon Wavamunno's WBS TV (Wavah Broadcasting Service Television, Channel 25, Your Number One Station/ Where Quality Matters), Government of Uganda, Adrikos Rum Raggi, Barefoot Power Uganda Ltd, Kiira Motors (Uganda), BMW, Cat(erpillar) Machinery, Sadolin Paints, Volkswagen, Malibu, Audi, Pampers, Equity Bank, Kinyara Sugar, Mukwano (Friendship), Infocom, Kodak Films, Westnile TV (Lighting up the Region), Arizona Empower Academy, KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) plus many Soccer Crests like Steaua Bucuresti (1986 UEFA European Cup Champions), etc. After Longevity and Fame, the Text in a Combination Logo might be dropped because the Pictorial Brand or Abstract Mark can still identify the Holder. Logomarks like Maersk, Opera Browser, Mitsubishi, X-Box, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), Philips, Shell Petrol, Beats by Dre, etc can become so commonplace that as a matter of fact, if the Company Name is not written next to them, they still solidly represent what they stand for. Removing the Name Barclays from next to the blue Eagle Symbol of the UK Bank founded in 1690 does not really alter the Interpretation of the distinct Mark. However, both are necessary just in case someone does not know the Mark yet, it's always a Synergy. I prefer the classic adidas Trefoil Leaf (2nd Logo in its History) to the Logo with three uneven Bars that form some sort of Mountain (3rd Logo); however the original Triplet Stripes always look great and representative on Products. The timeless handwritten Spencerian Script Heritage Logo of Coca-Cola has been around since 1886 (Winner of a 125 Bucks Competition actually), that was in the same Year Arsenal FC was formed as Woolwich Arsenal. Typography involves Serif Fonts (common in Publications); Sans (Without) Serif Fonts (easy to read on Electronic Screens) plus Display Fonts (Script, Blackletter, ALL CAPS and Fancy) that are decorative. Kerning is the horizontal Gap between Fonts depending on their Shapes while Tracking is the overall Spacing between all Characters on the same Line. Leading is the Line Spacing between Fonts above and below each other. It is counterproductive to frequently re-design a particular Company's Logo, might create Confusion! Coz it's a bittersweet Symphony, that's Life! Work out what does not work and improve on it, expand your Creativity with many Drawings (some create up to 50 rough Sketches, I usually do a Maximum of five Concepts like fast but sure though need to be more open to infinite Drafting)! Even in the Trash Dump, there are always valuable reuseable Throwns or Rejects to pick out. Vector Designs are scaleable. The blue and white Uganda Police Badge looks neat. Bank of Uganda's Coat of Arms or Coat of Coins, Cowries, Scales and Kobs (to quip in) is a very famous Household Combination Mark, you can find it in every Ugandan Home; it's that valuable even though some People may not pay Attention to it. From Celtel to Zain to Airtel, the red and white Rebranding with a "Lowercase A" Typemark was quite simple but spicy. The Warid Telecom Logo used back in Arabia where the Company originated was also very ingenious though the one used in Uganda had some Tweaks. National Insurance Corporation (NIC) Limited once unveiled a very colourful Logo. Uganda Christian University's Logo reminds me of Barcelona FC. I prefer the original NBS TV Logo used in the early 2010s to the one that replaced it, but there is nothing I can do to bring it back. The redesigned FUFA Logo is quite reenergising and modern even though the Stars on top are probably strategic, just in case Uganda wins Africa Cups or World Cups in future. The MTN Logo from South Africa is a very superb Symbol of Enterprise, Success and Mass Appeal. Even when MTN uses the Colour yellow as a Mark in Uganda, it does not clash with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Political Party, no Monopoly. Uganda Telecom (UTL)'s Mascot of a green Mango in the early 2000s (one of the Reasons I joined the Network) was also very delicious; Cartoon Style reminded me of my Favourite Newspaper Cartoonist Dan Barongo. Sometimes I wished the Character would make a Comeback as a blue Mango since UTL uses blue as its Brand Colour, syncronises well with Bluetooth and Bluegrass Music. Descriptive Logos include Jaguar (Car Model), Parliament of Uganda, Swan, Arsenal FC, Puma, Derrick Rose, Polo, Block Owners (SMACK League), Sprout Investment Club, Firefox, Penguin Books, Windows, Ugachick Poultry Breeders, Phoenix Suns, etc. I've taken part in a number of Logo Contests, but realised that the Hundreds of Ideas collected are used by the Organisers for other Designs. One personal Advantage nonetheless is Practice.

I painted my 1st Wall Mural at Shell Muyenga in the third quarter of 2007 for a Kenyan-born, Ugandanised Indian OB's double-roomed "Posh Pets" shop; I call him The Sultan (picture Zenji Empire), instead of neither Guru nor Pharaoh. The theme in his first room was from the Finding Nemo film because he sold petfish and aquariums, but the second room had Garfield, Ratatouille and Scooby Doo because he planned to sell dogfood and catfood also; both rooms each had one whole side made of mainly glass. Unfortunately, the Election chaos in Kenya somehow disrupted his plans but it was a reflective practising experience because it happened around Chogm and I got to witness the entire Commonwealth Entourage of black Range Rovers driving freely in the middle of the deserted twoway road. The Queen of England and other Chogm participants stayed in Munyonyo - on the other side of Muyenga and passed by the Gaba-Kansanga-Kabalagala Road while heading to Serena Conference Centre. On weekends, I would slope near the Kabalagala Junction to watch Arsenal's Fabregas on fire [What's in a Name?], unforgettable final 10 minutes madness! Although my OB got for me custom-mixed Colours from the Sadolin Paints Factory in Industrial Area behind New Vision, there is nothing under the sun that cannot be painted with only five colours: [Red, Yellow, Blue, Black and White]; mix any two, three or four of those in various ratios on a palette and you will get almost any colour shade or hue you want eg mixing red and yellow gives you orange while blue and yellow give you green, black and white create grey, etc. Those five main colours can beautifully stand for Race Harmony, no Discrimination whatsoever, just one People! The Homosexuals spoilt the Rainbow; it feels awkward associating with those colours because you might be misjudged but am glad they left out sky blue (cyan) which appears in the real natural Rainbow Spectrum plus pink (magenta). In future, solar paint will make painting a source of energy happyness. The paint tin might tip over accidentally, but pick it back up and continue painting: Problem? + Ideas = $olution! Do not cry over spilt paint! I do not fancy powdered waterpaint because it can be washed away easily but one fantastic water-based paint is silk vinyl emulsion which dries into a plastic film on the hand. A 4 litre Tin of silk vinyl emulsion from the Banda-based Regal Paints cost 55,000 UgX in Arua around mid 2017 though might be cheaper downcountry. 4 litres of oil paint from Plascon (Japanese Company in Kolo, Mukono) cost 36,000 UgX in Arua around the same time; Emulsion paint cost 20,000 UgX. I like the up and down waterfall stroke of painting with brushes when preparing the background for wall murals. When using a roller, it's usually up and down; find a painting rhythm to override fatigue till elasticity. Everytime I went to an Art Gallery, artists as well as curators would tell me how too expensive their acrylic paints cost. It's like buying expensive paints was a requirement; that definitely discouraged me from venturing into Art Business yet Half-litre tins of normal oil-based wallpaint used in house construction cost 5,000 UgX in 2017 (then 7K two to five Years later, 10K in some shops); Quarter-litre was 4,000 in Twenty22. You can use those instead of worrying about money issues and paint authenticity. As long as the materials are longlasting enough, use them! A high price is not everything! My second mural [a giant set design (cloth) backdrop of the Kampala City skyline for a KADS Christmas Pantomime created by Dr. Dick Stockley] happened at National Theatre before I even finished the first and two dudes wondered if I was doing it for the Queen who had already returned to UK; I just laughed. Everyone who goes to the National Theatre [Uganda National Cultural Centre] is a king and queen in their own right so I was painting it for them; some you call Kabaka, Agofe, Kyabazinga, Omukama, Omugabe, Rwot, Omusinga, Shaka, Kaizer, Igwe, Pharaoh, Oba, Tsar, Emoloit, Nabagereka, Omulangira, Omumbejja or Empress! I had been stopped from painting at the National Theatre one morning because I had no special Chogm ID yet I had been painting there days before Chogm. I was not cross but feeling very unlucky in my own beloved Capital City just because the lack of a mere piece of paper [which was not even necessary for more than a week] put me in the bracket of a possible criminal, I just boarded a Mukono-bound taxi and went to draw cartoons. I did not even have to maneouvre my way into the National Theatre compound like a Black James Bond. The next time I went to Sadolin Paints (established in 1907) was in 2012 where I met my Indian Macos OG [though in a different combination from 10 years behind] named Jaya Jethwa. I'm black and not bad in the Kabaka's language but Jaya is yellow and probably spoke better Luganda than me when I first saw her in 2001. When I was in O-Level, there was a Nigerian in A-Level rumoured to know eight to nine languages fluently. His name was Okereke. English, French and German were taught to everyone from S1 to 2 but I think Okereke taught himself Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese; not so sure about the languages he actually knew but they were about nine. Everything is just learnt because of environment, noone is really born with certain kinds of knowledge, maybe just built to learn faster; Art can be learnt through observation even if it is not taught directly!

Portrait of Lindsay Hames in Great Bend, Kansas (USA)...

The 2020 Coronavirus Disease-19 Lockdown altered my views about computer aided colouring or digital-painting. I normally use the paint bucket that is easy and very sweet in Photoshop plus airbrush tool that fills colour gaps in editorial cartoons but decided to paint with Gimp layers (at least two or three) and brushes too once in a while; Lindsay Hames from Kansas (USA) threw me a poetic touchdown pass during lockdown and I had to catch it like a Patriot or Deion Sanders. Find a Mode to celebrate whatever state of mind you're in! Death to ignorance, not Prudence! Also, creating a Color > Threshold in Gimp darkens lines and helps get rid of grains near where colours meet lines. Focus while learning computer graphics because it helps. Laziness (sloth or procrastination) is a deadly sin even though rest (or sleep) is necessary for renewal. My Ugatoons epiphany came in November 2020 while I tried to draw one of the actresses in The Office (Ugandan TV series) for the drama's director - Maureen Nankya who happens to be my Favourite Ugandan Actress since 2008, it was a spark of unexpected wonder. Some dudes in Ntinda (KLA Suburb) once told me to go abroad and study Cartooning but I developed my style in the Pearl of Africa through focussed observation and inspiration. Drawing requires motivation; Money is the biggest. You cannot draw just for the sake of drawing all the time. But what do you do when your art fails to sell or attract commissions? Find fun and effectively stress-free techniques to make your work more eye-catching! "When you lose, improve," Pep Guardiola (Best Ballpasser in the 90s and Tiki Taka coach at Barcelona) taught me that. No surrender, just improvements. Colouring hand-drawn cartoons digitally is complementary like painting a finished house.
