Christmas in UG
I was born in 1984, the same Year Wham! - a British Duo released their "Last Christmas, I Gave You My Heart" Hit but I've never had to save myself from Tears during Xmas because JESUS, the Tear-remover takes Centre Stage. Instead, I learnt a valuable Lesson about Covetousness, Jealousy or Envy. One Christmas while at Spire Road (Jinja), new Shoes were bought for all my three Youngest Sisters but none was bought for me. From that Day onwards, I started respecting other People's Fortune instead of envying them. I hated the Greed or Gluttony in me for example we would be given small Cakes, then I would eat mine fast and beg my Youngest Sister for half of hers; it had to stop somewhere. For the next Year, I bounced in my old Pair till I got new Shoes and I did get many new plus second-hand ones after that, not only during Christmas. In addition, I later taught myself how to mend Footwear inspired by my Cousin Charles and Uncle Jad plus Dad; it helped me forget those Moments when the Shoes would get torn at the Front because of Soccer-playing and gape like a "Fish" hence the Slangname by Schoolmates. The only Songs that cultivated a distinct Christmas Feeling for me in the early 90s were from mainly Boney M, Philly Lutaaya, Church Christmas Carols and Jim Reeves (even though I did not hear him played much but just felt he was also a strong Christmas Flavour). Later many other Artistes produced Christmas Cheer, from Mariah Carey to Bebe Cool. I did not understand how some Chap from Faraway Israel had his Birthday celebrated World-over with lots of Fanfare. My Oldest Memory of Christ's Birthday was 1989 when me and my Favourite Peer Cousin at that Time Emmanuel Drabo ate so much that our Bellies bulged. We went and slept face down on the beds in the Boys Room while looking at the Bottom of each other's opposite Bed trying to press our Bellies on the Mattresses with our Body Weights. Our Demise was even mentioned on Radio Uganda's KK Boys Show; we showered to try and shrink the Stomach but it still did not work. I learnt to check my Eating during Christmas, only vomitted once after Xmas Lunch in Arua because of Mixed Oils. It used to be a Tradition in Jinja that we would take Photos on Christmas Day, nowadays that Tradition has waned. Christmas in Jinja was about Church, Family, Christmas Music, Decorations - Cypress Tree with Lights transplanted into a metallic Debe plastered outside with Newspapers and filled inside with Soil, Feasting, Rice, Cutting a Cake, Photos and Soda. The hilarious Kickboxer Moses Golola acts as King Herod in a Ugandan Flick about Christmas in Kampala. When we still had a Cypress Fence while our KLA Neighbours had Wall Fences, People would travel from far even in Cars during Christmas to chop our Fence, with or without Permission. In 2010, KLA became the first Place where I celebrated Xmas while my Parents were out of the Town I was in; I used to travel to Arua every Year from 2001 to celebrate with them. For others, Christmas is about Gifts (opened on Boxing Day) and Travels plus helping the Unfortunate...
